ED Response to a No Notice Mass Casualty Event (DPH-134)

The ED Response to a No Notice Mass Casualty Event course focuses on educating Emergency Department staff how to triage
and treat an overwhelming number of patients in a short period of time. During this 4-hour course students are educated using a
combination of 2 lecture hours, followed by 2 hours of skill stations.
The classroom material presented is comprised of the following topics:
✓ The history of active violence situations as it pertains to hospital staff.
• Teaches the student what brought us to where we are today.
✓ Predicting locations of unintended patient access to your hospital.
• During an event patients will be delivered to any entrance of your hospital. Staff members need to understand
this and prepare for something outside of their comfort zone.
✓ Explaining and applying how to rapidly assess and treat life threatening injuries.
• MARCH Assessment – A fast paced assessment focusing on treating life threats from penetrating trauma.
• Tourniquet application – Providing the student with more experience applying these life saving devices.
• Wound Packing – Students will have a greater understanding of anatomical sites and why this skill is so
important.
• Chest Seals – How to quickly seal off penetrating trauma to the chest cavity.
• Needle Decompression – Educating students how to relieve a life-threatening tension pneumothorax.
✓ Identifying triage and transport methods of the injured.
• Moving a large number of patients using unconventional means.
✓ Discussing situational awareness and scene security of employees and patients.
• Educating the student how to break complacency and become more
situationally aware.
The 2-hour practical exercises are comprised of the following skills stations;
✓ MARCH Assessment
✓ Tourniquets and Wound Packing
✓ Needle Decompression and Chest Seals
✓ Triage and Transport
