Event Description

Radiological Preparedness & Emergency Response (RPER) (DPH-138)

Program Description: Recently, President Obama discussed with several heads of state the dangers of nuclear proliferation and threats from radiological incidents. During the month of April in India, 7 civilians have been exposed to radiation inadvertently. This incident, in which radioactive scrap materials found its way to a busy market in Delhi, underlies our community’s vulnerability to a wide range of threats from radiological and nuclear incidents.

On March 18, 2010, speakers at the monthly CDC Public Health Grand Rounds discussed Radiological/Nuclear Preparedness Challenges and Efforts and highlighted the lack of sufficient subject matter expertise as well as education and training for emergency responders.

This training course will focus on training these responders, using a combination of didactic and hands-on sessions, on the proper and safe, initial evaluation and management of victims injured in an overt or covert radiological or nuclear incident.

Target Audience: The Radiological Preparedness and Emergency Response training is intended for pre-hospital care providers and first responders and first receivers as well as public health responders who may be called on to respond to a mass casualty incident and/or treat victims of a radiological exposure.
